1) Nevada Poet Laureate.
Current Laureate: Vacant
The position of Nevada State Poet Laureate was established on July 15, 1957. . First laureate was Mildred Breedlove. Through 2007 it had been a lifetime position and occupied by Norman Kaye since 1967. On April 30, 2007, Gov. Jim Gibbons named Kaye Poet Laureate Emeritus.I have listed the address for the Nevada Legislature on the link above. Please use that link to write your legislator about getting a new Poet Laureate for Nevada appointed.
In many states, the State Poet Laureate serves a two year term. (there is much discussion in Nevada about a three year term also, which is fine). Poet Laureates normally serve unpaid and travel around the State promoting poetry and writing. It can be a busy position and one or two, two year terms can be plenty for most people.
Nevada needs a new Poet Laureate. Please write your legislature and ask that a new bill be introduced to redesign the position and make it a two or three year term. Urge your local Arts Council to push forward with a new appointment.

The Nevada Arts Council is a great resource for Nevada poets and writers. It lists programs and grants as well as news updates on the goings on in Nevada Arts.

The Henderson Writer’s Group was established in 2001. The goal of the group is to provide opportunities for critiquing and networking with other Nevada writers.
